Saltwater intrusion is a phenomenon wherein seawater infiltrates freshwater aquifers, tainting essential groundwater resources. Water characterized by its high salt content is unsuitable for human consumption and irrigation purposes. The risk of saltwater intrusion looms over coastal water wells when the number of wells becomes excessive or when their pumping rates are very high. Also, the intensive extraction of groundwater can trigger ground subsidence, which shrinks the underground aquifers' capacity to retain water. Coastal cities around the world are faced with saltwater intrusion from over extraction of groundwater.
